DTV police certificate: how long it takes in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, France and Germany

A DTV police certificate takes anywhere from one hour (France, by email) to about 120 business days (Canada, when your fingerprints match a record), so the country that issues yours decides your timeline. Since 31 August 2026, every Destination Thailand Visa applicant has to attach one. It is the only document in the file you cannot produce on the day, which makes it the first thing to order.

Who needs a DTV police certificate?

Every new DTV applicant needs one, whatever the category. The Royal Thai Embassy in London lists a police clearance certificate "issued within 6 months from the date of submission" among the documents for all three DTV categories, and names the ACRO certificate or the Irish police certificate as examples. Erickson Immigration Group, reporting the change on 1 September 2026, adds that dependants under 16 may submit the main applicant's certificate instead of their own.

The certificate can come from one of two countries: the country of your nationality, or the country where you submit the application (tdac.info, summarising the 31 August 2026 notice). The same rule change means you now apply through the e-Visa portal from your country of nationality or permanent residence, never from inside Thailand. Six months is the London figure, not a universal one. The Thai Visa Services guide reports that US missions ask for an FBI certificate issued within three months. Check the exact window on the page of the post that will handle your file.

How long does a DTV police certificate take in each country?

The fastest certificates are the ones built on your civil record (France, Australia without fingerprints); the slowest are those built on fingerprints (United States, Canada). Here is the detail as checked on 25 September 2026, with the sources listed below.

Two things move your date more than the fee does.

The first is fingerprints. The FBI and the RCMP check fingerprints, which means an appointment with an accredited provider and a card that can be rejected if the prints are poor. France and Germany search your civil identity, which is why a French bulletin can arrive the same evening. Australia runs a name check by default and only asks for fingerprints in some cases.

The second is where you are. The German office warns of longer processing for applications sent from abroad, which need an officially certified signature. Several of these services also post a paper certificate, so add international mail time if you are already travelling.

How do you get an ACRO police certificate for a Thailand visa?

You apply online on the ACRO website, pay 55 GBP for the standard service or 95 GBP for premium, and allow about 12 or 4 working days. ACRO publishes its fees on a page that needs JavaScript to display, so we cross-checked these figures on 25 September 2026 on MigrationProtect's ACRO guide, which also states that postage is included and that the certificate is issued on paper only.

The London embassy names the ACRO certificate directly, so UK applicants do not need to guess which document to order. If your date is tight, premium is the cheaper option than a missed appointment.

When should you order it in the DTV timeline?

Order it once your bank balance is in place, not first and not last. The London window is six months, and the certificate is only one of two clocks running at the same time.

The other clock is money. Thai Visa Services writes that posts want bank statements for the last three months ending at no less than 500,000 THB, and that a lump sum parked in the 90 days before the application is the most common rejection pattern it sees. Processing also varies by post: the same guide quotes 5 working days in Ho Chi Minh City and 5 to 15 working days on London's e-Visa page.

A sensible order, based on those published delays:

1. Put the 500,000 THB in the account you will show, and leave it there for three months.
2. Around week six to eight of that wait, order the police certificate (earlier for Canada or Germany, later for France).
3. Gather the work evidence while you wait: employment contract, client contracts, company registration.
4. Open the e-Visa portal last, with every document ready as a PDF.

Does the certificate need a translation or legalisation?

Some posts require both, and London publishes the clearest rule. The Royal Thai Embassy in London says all supporting documents issued outside Thailand and the UK must come with certified English translations and be notarised by an embassy or a Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A French bulletin or a German Führungszeugnis sent to London would fall under that rule.

What if you applied before 31 August 2026?

You are not affected if you submitted and paid before that date. tdac.info quotes the notice: applications submitted and paid before 31 August 2026 are processed under the previous requirements, and a DTV already issued is not changed.
