Can you renew the DTV visa after 5 years?
Nobody has reached the end of a DTV yet. The visa started on 15 July 2024, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, so the oldest ones run until July 2029.
What the official page says, and what it leaves out
The Royal Thai Embassy in London describes the DTV as "5 years / Multiple Entries", with 180 days per entry and one extension of up to 180 days per entry at the Immigration Bureau. Once a stay is used up, holders "need to depart Thailand and re-enter the country with the same DTV visa within the visa's validity date". The page, updated on 8 September 2026, says nothing about renewing the visa itself.
How advisers read it
None of what follows is an official rule. The Thaiger puts it in one line: "the DTV is not renewable. When the 5 years end, you apply for a new visa from scratch." Siam Legal, a Bangkok law firm, said on 23 February 2026 that the visa expires at the five-year mark "with no automatic renewal mechanism available", that a new DTV application "may also be possible if the program remains available", and that the programme "remains subject to regulatory adjustment". Issa Compass, a visa agency, is the only source we found for two practical points, in a guide updated on 2 October 2026: you cannot re-enter on an expired DTV, but a stay granted before expiry runs until the date on your stamp. Neither point appears on an embassy page.
Renewal is not the same as the extension
The 180-day extension you can request at an immigration office lengthens one stay. It does not lengthen the visa. Our post on the DTV extension and why people fly out instead covers that step.
What a new application asks for today
| Requirement | As of 2 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Where you apply | Online, from outside Thailand, at the Thai post for the country where you are a national or a permanent resident |
| Funds | At least 500,000 THB on bank statements |
| Police certificate | Issued within 6 months of submission (London) |
| Fee | 10,000 THB, 300 GBP in London |
These rules changed on 31 August 2026 and may change again before 2029, so treat the table as today's picture and not a forecast.
What we would do
Write the "valid until" date of your visa in your calendar, and time your last entry before it. A year ahead, compare the routes in our Thailand visa options guide, because the LTR, Thailand Privilege and the retirement visa are the usual alternatives. The complete DTV guide covers the application itself, and visa check ranks the options for your situation. For a decision that depends on it, confirm with the embassy handling your file or a licensed Thai immigration lawyer.
