Portugal answers, taxes
What tax deductions can I claim on my Portuguese IRS return?
These are collection deductions, meaning they come off the tax you owe rather than off your taxable income. The amounts are modest next to the brackets, which is why they are worth automating rather than agonising over, but the year they apply to is worth getting right.
Which year the figures belong to
Portugal files a return for income earned the previous year, so the return most people file in 2026 covers 2025 income, and the return due in 2027 will cover 2026 income. Ceilings can move between the two, which is what happened to the rent deduction this year.
For 2025 income, filed between April and June 2026
| Category | Rate | Ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| General household expenses | 35 percent | 250 euros per taxpayer |
| Health | 15 percent | 1,000 euros |
| Education and training | 30 percent | 800 euros |
| Residential rent | 15 percent | 700 euros |
A couple filing jointly gets the general expenses ceiling twice, once per taxpayer.
What changes for 2026 income, filed in 2027
Practitioner guides report the residential rent ceiling rising to 900 euros for 2026 income, the return due in 2027. We have not found a confirmed change to the general, health or education ceilings for that year, so treat the three figures above as the current baseline until the 2027 filing season confirms otherwise.
Everything runs through e-fatura
An invoice only counts if your NIF is on it at the moment it is issued, which is why the question at every till in Portugal is whether you want the number on the receipt. Expenses land in your e-fatura area on Portal das Financas through the year, and you classify the ones the system could not sort by itself. The classification window closes before the filing window opens, so a February check beats an April scramble.
Two practical points. Rent only counts when the lease is registered with Financas, which is also what makes it usable as proof of address, and health spending at the higher VAT rate needs a prescription attached to qualify.
What this page does not cover
Portugal also applies an overall cap on these deductions that varies with taxable income, and there are further deductions for dependants, alimony, homes in the interior and retirement savings. We have not found a 2026 version of the overall cap on an official page we can date, so this page does not publish a figure for it. Your accountant can tell you where your own household lands.
The tax estimator does not model these credits, so treat its output as the bill before deductions. The 2026 bracket table is the other half of the calculation.
