Vietnam visa run from Da Nang: what a year of runs costs

A Vietnam visa run from Da Nang costs roughly USD 87 to 220 per trip in September 2026, which puts a year of four runs on the 90-day e-visa at about USD 350 to 900 in cash, before accommodation and the working days you lose on the road. The cheapest run is by road to the Lao Bao border with Laos; the simplest is a return flight to Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok.

How does a Vietnam visa run work?

A visa run means leaving Vietnam before your permission to stay ends, then coming back on a new one. Most passports rely on the 90-day e-visa, which the Vietnam Immigration Department sells on its portal for USD 25 single entry or USD 50 multiple entry, processed in 3 working days. It cannot be extended inside Vietnam, so a long stay is a chain of 90-day blocks. Four blocks cover 360 days.

The practical sequence has five steps:

1. Apply for the next e-visa on the official portal about a week before the current one ends, because processing takes 3 working days once the file and payment are complete.
2. Keep the portrait under 50KB and the passport scan under 200KB, as the portal requires.
3. Check every field before you pay. Tan Van Lang, a Vietnamese visa agency, notes the fee is not refunded after a rejection, even one caused by a typo.
4. Leave Vietnam before the current e-visa expires, never after.
5. Re-enter through the checkpoint named on your new e-visa.

How much does a Vietnam visa run cost?

One run costs between USD 87 and about USD 220, depending on the route. The e-visa is the only fixed line. Transport is the variable one.

What does a year of visa runs from Da Nang cost?

Four runs cost about USD 350 to 900 in cash, and the working days lost usually cost more than that. The table below is a model year of four runs. The Lao Bao range covers either e-visa; the flight lines use the USD 50 multiple-entry e-visa, which lets you leave mid-block without buying a new visa.

Timing moves the flight lines a lot. Kayak shows November as the cheapest month for Kuala Lumpur at about USD 84 return and June as the dearest at about USD 208. For Bangkok, September is cheapest at about USD 114 and March dearest at about USD 231. If your blocks keep landing in the expensive months, the flying options pass USD 1,000 a year.

We have left accommodation out because we found no dated public figure for a night near the Lao Bao border, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. Add your own. The Lao Bao run can be done in one day: the operator describes a 10 to 12 hour round trip of about 250 km each way, leaving Da Nang around 6 AM.

The line most people skip is time. A flight run usually takes a travel day out and a travel day back. Model two lost days per run, eight a year, and multiply by your own day rate. At an assumed USD 200 a day that is USD 1,600, which is larger than every cash line in the table.

Is Vietnam cracking down on visa runs?

No published rule limits the number of visa runs, but repeated entries can draw questions at the counter. ExpatDen, in a guide updated on 20 August 2026, says no number of permitted runs is published anywhere and that repeat entries attract attention rather than a formal cap. It reports longer questioning and requests for documents after several back-to-back stays, and rare refusals. Carry an onward ticket and proof of where you are staying.

What did tighten is the penalty for staying too long. Decree 282/2025, in force since 15 December 2025, fines an overstay of under 16 days VND 500,000 to 2 million and 16 to under 30 days VND 5 to 10 million, according to Viet Nam News. From 16 days, deportation is possible. Never overstay to catch a cheaper flight.

Can you do a Vietnam visa run to Laos?

Yes, and Lao Bao is the nearest practical border crossing for a visa run from Da Nang. The Lao side is Dansavanh. Best Bus Vietnam states that the Laos visa on arrival costs USD 40 to 50 in cash depending on your passport, and that torn USD notes are commonly refused.

If you come back by road, name Lao Bao as the entry checkpoint on your new e-visa.

Is a 45-day visa-free loop cheaper?

Usually not, even when your passport qualifies. Under Resolution 44/NQ-CP, citizens of Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland enter visa free for 45 days, for any purpose, from 15 March 2025 to 14 March 2028, according to the Vietnamese Government news portal. A second list of 12 countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland, gets 45 days for tourism only.

The visa fee drops to zero, but the number of runs doubles to eight a year. Eight flights at the Bangkok average is USD 1,360, against USD 880 for four runs on e-visas. What should you check on the other side of the border?

Check the country you fly to, because its rules change too. Thailand announced that from 15 September 2026 most visa-exempt passports get up to 30 days, replacing the 60-day exemption, with land-border entries limited to twice per calendar year. Malaysia's Immigration Department lists the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and Canada among countries that need no visa. Do visa runs reset Vietnam's 183-day tax rule?

No. A visa run keeps your immigration status clean, but it does nothing for tax residency. According to Acclime, you become a Vietnamese tax resident if you spend 183 days or more in Vietnam in a calendar year or in 12 consecutive months from your first arrival, or if you lease a home for 183 days or more.
