Lisbon to New York time difference: the weeks a year it drops to four hours

Lisbon is five hours ahead of New York most of the year and four hours ahead for three or four weeks, because the EU and the US change clocks on different Sundays.

The Lisbon to New York time difference is five hours for most of the year, and four hours during two short windows each year: about two or three weeks in March and one week between late October and early November. The windows exist because the European Union and the United States change their clocks on different Sundays.

For anyone in Portugal working with American clients, those weeks move every recurring call by an hour. This page gives the rule, the exact 2026 and 2027 dates from the official sources, and what the shift means for a US facing working day.

Why does the Lisbon to New York time difference change?

The gap changes because the two sides start and end summer time on different dates. Mainland Portugal follows the EU rule set by Directive 2000/84/EC: summer time begins at 01:00 UTC on the last Sunday of March and ends at 01:00 UTC on the last Sunday of October (EUR-Lex, Directive 2000/84/EC). Portuguese legal time is kept by the Observatório Astronómico de Lisboa, which publishes the change dates (OAL, Mudança da hora). Lisbon runs on UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer.

New York follows the US federal rule in 15 U.S.C. 260a: daylight saving time starts at 02:00 local time on the second Sunday of March and ends at 02:00 local time on the first Sunday of November (Cornell LII, 15 U.S. Code 260a). New York runs on UTC-5 in winter and UTC-4 in summer.

So the US moves its clocks forward two or three weeks before Europe does, and moves them back one week after Europe does. During those stretches, America is on summer time and Portugal is not, and the gap shrinks from five hours to four.

When is Lisbon only four hours ahead of New York in 2026 and 2027?

In 2026 the four hour windows run from 8 to 28 March and from 25 to 31 October. In 2027 they run from 14 to 27 March and from 31 October to 6 November. The table below uses the start dates published by NIST for 2026 (NIST, Daylight saving time), the Portuguese dates published by the OAL for 2026, and the two legal rules above for 2027.

YearUS clocks forwardPortugal clocks forwardSpring window (4 hours)Portugal clocks backUS clocks backAutumn window (4 hours)
2026Sunday 8 MarchSunday 29 March8 to 28 March, three weeksSunday 25 OctoberSunday 1 November25 to 31 October, one week
2027Sunday 14 MarchSunday 28 March14 to 27 March, two weeksSunday 31 OctoberSunday 7 November31 October to 6 November, one week

The autumn window is always one week, because the last Sunday of October and the first Sunday of November are always seven days apart. The spring window is two or three weeks, depending on where the second Sunday of March falls. That gives four weeks in total in 2026 and three in 2027. The common phrase "two weeks a year" undercounts: the real total is three or four weeks.

As of 26 September 2026, the next window opens on Sunday 25 October 2026, when Lisbon falls back, and closes on Sunday 1 November 2026, when New York falls back.

What are US East Coast business hours in Lisbon time?

A 09:00 to 17:00 Eastern working day is 14:00 to 22:00 in Lisbon for most of the year, and 13:00 to 21:00 during the four hour windows. The arithmetic is simple, but the evening consequences are real.

  1. A 16:00 New York call is 21:00 in Lisbon most of the year, and 20:00 during the windows.
  2. A 17:00 New York call is 22:00 in Lisbon most of the year, and 21:00 during the windows.
  3. A 09:00 New York standup is 14:00 in Lisbon most of the year, and 13:00 during the windows, which can collide with a Portuguese lunch.

The same federal rule applies across the US time zones that observe daylight saving. Los Angeles runs on UTC-8 in winter and UTC-7 in summer, so a 09:00 to 17:00 Pacific day is 17:00 to 01:00 in Lisbon for most of the year and 16:00 to 00:00 during the windows. No clock change makes daily real time work with the West Coast comfortable from Portugal.

How do you schedule US calls around the daylight saving gap?

The practical answer is to plan the windows in advance, because calendars handle them silently and people do not. Four habits cover most of it.

  1. Put all four change dates in your calendar as all day events: the US Sundays in March and November, and the Portuguese Sundays in March and October.
  2. Before each change, check who created each recurring meeting. A series set in a New York calendar stays at the same New York time and moves by an hour in Lisbon. A series set in a Lisbon calendar does the reverse for the American side.
  3. Send a two line note in the client channel on the Friday before each change, with the new Lisbon and New York times written out.
  4. If a late call is unavoidable, such as a quarterly review that needs a senior person at the end of the US day, aim for the four hour windows, when a 17:00 New York slot starts at 21:00 in Lisbon rather than 22:00.

When you quote availability to a new US client, quote it in their time zone and say once that your hard stop moves by an hour twice a year. That single line prevents most misunderstandings later.

Is Lisbon better than Madrid for working US hours?

Yes, by one hour all year. Spain runs on Central European Time, UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer, so Madrid is one hour ahead of Lisbon (Zeitverschiebung, Madrid time zone). A New York call that ends at 22:00 in Lisbon ends at 23:00 in Madrid. Both follow the same EU change dates, so the four hour windows for Lisbon are five hour windows for Madrid.

The trade off is Asia. Singapore stays on UTC+8 all year with no daylight saving (Zeitverschiebung, Lisbon to Singapore), so it is seven hours ahead of Lisbon in Portuguese summer and eight hours ahead in winter. A Singapore working day ending at 18:00 local time ends at 10:00 or 11:00 in Lisbon. If you serve both Asia and the Americas from Portugal, the realistic pattern is an early morning block for Asia and a late afternoon block for the US.

Will Europe stop changing the clocks?

Not for now: the EU rule above still applies in 2026 and 2027. The OAL page lists the Portuguese change dates, and the directive still requires the Commission to publish the timetable of change dates in advance. Until a new rule is adopted and published in EUR-Lex, plan on the same pattern: last Sundays of March and October in Portugal, second Sunday of March and first Sunday of November in the US.

Frequently asked questions

What is the time difference between Lisbon and New York?

Lisbon is five hours ahead of New York for most of the year. For two short windows it is four hours ahead: from the second Sunday of March until Portugal changes its clocks on the last Sunday of March, and from the last Sunday of October until the US changes back on the first Sunday of November. In 2026 that means 8 to 28 March and 25 to 31 October.

When do the clocks change in Portugal in 2026 and 2027?

Mainland Portugal moves its clocks forward on Sunday 29 March 2026 and back on Sunday 25 October 2026, at 01:00 UTC, as published by the Observatório Astronómico de Lisboa. Under the EU rule in Directive 2000/84/EC, the 2027 changes fall on Sunday 28 March and Sunday 31 October 2027. Lisbon is on UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer.

Does every US state change its clocks on the same day?

No, most do but not all. Under 15 U.S.C. 260a, a state may exempt itself by law from daylight saving time, so a few places stay on standard time all year and their gap with Lisbon changes only when Portugal changes. Every state that does observe it switches on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, at 02:00 local time. Check your client's state before you plan.

What are 9 to 5 Eastern hours in Lisbon time?

A 09:00 to 17:00 Eastern working day is 14:00 to 22:00 in Lisbon for most of the year. During the four hour windows in March and late October, it becomes 13:00 to 21:00. That is why East Coast clients are workable from Portugal with an afternoon and evening schedule, while Pacific hours land at 17:00 to 01:00 in Lisbon most of the year.
